Who are you? Tell us about yourself.

My name is Wyatt Schwendeman-Curtis. In my current profession I do product forecasting and data analytics. I LOVE organizing and studying data. That is one of the reasons I chose to run for Clerk & Recorder. I have always been passionate about our democratic process.

I was born in Westminster, Colorado. I grew up in a blended family and split my time between my parents in Orrville, Ohio, and Erie, Colorado. During the summers, my brother and I would visit my dad on a ranch in Colorado, and spent a lot of time in the Rocky Mountains.

I graduated from the University of Akron with a degree in Political Science. I have always loved being around people from all walks of life and continued working in the restaurant industry for 12 years, with 6 of those in management. It was a great way to connect with people. In 2018, I decided to change careers and was able to work my way up into the demand planning position I currently hold.

Around that time I met my husband, Justin. We were fortunate to be able to purchase a home up in Wellington, Colorado. Two years ago, I decided to pursue politics again and started getting more involved in Wellington. I sat on the town's events community board and utility board. It was then I ran for Mayor of Wellington losing by only 180 votes. I continued my work on the utility board working to plan a new wastewater treatment plant to help lower water bills for our neighbors. Learn more about me at www.wyattforlarimer.com/about

Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?

  • I would like to provide more data to the people of Larimer County. Being TRANSPARENT about our election data by sharing as much of it as possible is one of my top priorities. Updates, regional data, percentages, these are all things that I think are important to share when we have any election here in Larimer. I would also like to engage our citizens more and give them a window into all the things the clerk's office does and how it operates through digital communication and in person events through the county.
  • My love of spreadsheets and data also drives me to make things as EFFICIENT as possible. It's my goal to ensure all of our systems are working in synchronicity. No one needs to wait or miss a payment for a service because something wasn't communicated or something took too long to process. I would also like to improve the office work environment to increase the retention of our staff and will be fully supportive if they choose to participate in Collective Bargaining through unionizing. Additionally I will work with the local city clerks and elected officials to work toward coordinated municipal elections to help save our cities' and county's resources.
  • I live in Wellington, Colorado, and smaller towns in our county don't always have the Clerk's Services ACCESSIBLE to them. I want to work with local community leaders to find where there may be gaps and figure out a way to make sure our rural communities have access to all the services they need. This is especially important for our voters have access to cast their ballots in any form. Mail, drop off, or in person, it is imperative that we do what we can to provide that access. I would also like the forms and ballots to be more inclusive by providing more gender and ethnicity options. I will also work with local organizations about the possibility of adding a Spanish ballot option in Larimer.

What legacy would you like to leave?

I would be the first Democrat and LGBT member elected to the Clerk & Recorder position in Larimer County. I want to bring in new ideas while keeping the things that work well. I would love to leave a legacy of rejuvenation, connection, and transparency.

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

I think it is important to be accessible and approachable to the citizens you represent so you can stay connected about the needs in your district. Having honest and transparent discourse about those needs and the government's ability to address them can help voters stay informed and connected with their local governments.

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

I think this one of the unique offices that you can be elected to because it is not focused on policy but more about managing services for the people you serve.

I think that this particular role should have someone passionate about data and the transparency of that data to its citizens.

Someone that works to stretch the tax payer dollars as far as they can go by searching for ideas that can improve efficiencies and developing steps to achieve them.

I also think it is the clerk's job to make sure the services they provide are always accessible to the people in their county.

Clerk and Recorders also have a large staff that they manage, and as a people manager, I think it is important to foster a safe, positive work environments with opportunities for development that encourage employee retention.

Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?

The West Wing show from the early 2000s. That is what drove my passion as a kid wanting to get involved in politics and make a difference.

What are your views on financial transparency and government accountability?

I think these are extremely important areas for all of our elected officials. People should know where their tax money is being allocated. I think that information should be transparent, easily accessible, and digestible.

I also think that it is very important that our elected officials are accountable. They are elected to represent us and should be held to the same standards as any other citizen and even hold themselves to a higher standard in order to set an example in their community for what a public servant should be.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

Even though the position I am running for will not allow me to directly affect policy changes, I plan to lobby with the CCCA to work with our local legislators on a number of issues. I would like to codify the rights to same-sex marriage in our state constitution, continue to help support labor and the working people in our county and state, support disenfranchised communities making sure they have access to the things they need to be represented, a focus on environmental practices that can help reduce our carbon footprint, and supporting our commissioners work on transportation and infrastructure projects to help us all stay better connected.

What was your very first job? How long did you have it?

I was a grocery store clerk at 16 years old.

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

Harvey Milk, a courageous LGBT advocate and politician that was assassinated. He was a leader on anti-lgbt discrimination in housing and the work place. I want to follow that lead and show that representation matters.

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

My honesty, and love for data and community. I think that it is important to love the analytical side of things in this role, but also love being connected to the community so that you can keep connected to their needs. I also think through honest communication we can work to build back the trust of elected officials. It starts at a local level.

What is something that has been a struggle in your life?

Learning that you will never please everyone and knowing that I won't be accepted by everyone.

What was the last song that got stuck in your head?

Tattoo by Loreen

What is your favorite book? Why?

Harry Potter series

What organizations or individuals have endorsed your campaign?

The Working Families Party Colorado, Building Bridges and Roadmap for Progress, I am currently working to earn the endorsem*nt of other organizations and unions so please visit www.wyattforlarimer.com/why-wyatt to view all of my endorsem*nts.

What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?

September 11, 2001 and I was in 6th grade at the time and 12 years old, I believe. I remember that day vividly and all students were sent home early to be with their families. The teacher had it on the TV and then we were all assembled into the gym for a gathering and then sent home.
