Callaway Clips. Corn planting is the order of the day... Les Kemp of Calwood visited home folks {Toledo}. Misses Emma & Lillie Geurrant of Lamar attended Unity Church. Alfred Klein has a horse badly foundered. T. R. Smith put on a roof for Mr. Marlow. The little gasoline boat is out on dry ground. The river fell so fast they could not get it afloat. John Taylor is moving his windmill down to Mr. Redden's well and will run the water to his farm through pipes. William Shryock has planted 20 acres of ground to watermelons. He expects to supply Callaway County. US citizens consume about 4,000,000 bottles of pickles every week. H. M. Pemberton, Fulton, has money to loan on land at 5 percent. LaCrosse Lumber has 50 shades of ready mixed paints. They have sold 60,000 gallons.

100 years ago (1924)

Callaway County leads all Missouri counties in number of cars of livestock shipped to the Producers Commission Association last week. Callaway sent 12 cars. The closest rival was Boone County with 10 cars. The stock from Callaway was contributed as follows: McCredie Shipping Assoc., Ted West, Manager, 2; Auxvasse Assoc., C. R. Craighead, Manager, 3; New Bloomfield Assoc., Swan Ferguson, Manager, 1; Fulton Assoc., Albert Smith, Manager, 1; Tebbetts Assoc., Henry Hemeyer, Manager, 1; R. L. Smith, McCredie, 1; W. C. Link, Tebbetts, 1. The "Producers" is a farmer owned, controlled, non-profit Commission Assoc. which rebates back to the farmers all profits above running expenses. Last year, the National Producers of which the St. Louis Producers is a member, rebated to the farmers over $450,000.

75 years ago (1949)

Miss Constance Lee Wise, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. J. Russell Wise, 608 Grand Ave., and Robert Lee Higginbotham, son of Mr. & Mrs. Hugh Higginbotham, St. Louis, were married at the First Presbyterian Church. Dr. John A. Gates read the marriage ceremony. Miss Audrey Garrett sang 2 songs, accompanied by Miss Anna Lee Fenley. Miss Patricia Whitmer was the maid-of-honor, Miss Lorraine Gentner was the bridesmaid and the bride's sister, Carolyn Sue, was the flower girl. Harold Sullivan was the best man. Mrs. Higginbotham is a graduate of FHS and of William Woods College. The bridegroom graduated from Westminster College. For two months, they will live in St. Louis before moving to Baton Rouge, LA where he will work on his master's degree at Louisiana State.

Two Sows Farrow 37 Live Pigs At McCredie. Most farmers would be satisfied if each sow farrowed ten pigs in a litter, but not Ted Fort and Clay Moore who farm under a partnership at McCredie. They have two purebred Duroc sows which farrowed 18 and 19 living pigs, respectively, within 24 hours. Can you top this?

50 years ago (1974)

Several members of the Youth Conservation Corp (YCC) have undertaken the project of renovating the Shady Oak Park and picnic area 2 ½ miles west of the Fulton Airport. The YCC is a federally sponsored program for high school age youth between the ages of 15-19. The program is set up all across the US to teach youngsters something about the environment and conservation, as well as providing summer employment. The workers in the Fulton area are helping to complete some much needed work on the Cedar Creek Purchase Unit's land in the Clark National Forest. The six students spending six weeks working for Gerald Greenwood, Unit Manager, are Sandy Paul, Teresa Blattner, Simone Smola, Terry Ray, Mark Tisch and Walter Ockert. An additional employee, Harriet Weger, is a MU Wildlife major who has been hired for the entire summer. Other projects for the group include working on fences, sowing seeds for wildlife feeding areas, a controlled burn to create new habitat areas and other conservation projects.

25 years ago (1999)

Lt. Col. Ned P. Digh and Esther Digh of Fulton announce the engagement of their daughter, Dr. Dara E. W. Digh to Christopher J. Lowe. He is the son of Michael and Caren Lowe of Lawrence, KS. The bride-to-be is a 1989 graduate of FHS and a 1993 graduate of Washington University. She also holds a degree in medicine from Northwestern University and is completing her final year of residency in family practice at Truman Medical Center East in Kansas City. The prospective groom, a graduate of Lawrence HS and a graduate of the University of Kansas, earned a juris doctor degree from Marquette University Law School. He has just accepted a position with the KC law firm, Larson & Larson. An August 7 wedding is planned at the St. Mary the Virgin, Aldermanbury in Fulton.

Participating in the competition will be 5 Callaway County contestants. They are Dusty Mattern of New Bloomfield, Donnie Winingear of Kingdom City, Tom Callahan of Fulton, Shane Fletcher of New Bloomfield and Sean Prater of Fulton. The top four qualifiers from each event will qualify for the National Finals in Gillette, WY
