The first male artist to be named to this high honor declared himself “The King of Country Music” on his 1962 LP of the same name. Roy Acuff, a leading personalityof the Grand Old Opry,sold 25 million records by 1962 and becamethe first living member to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.He then co-founded Acuff-Rose Publishing Company in Nashville in 1942, which is best known for signing another iconic figure, Hank Williams. Despite all she has achieved, McEntire is still as humble as her Oklahoma beginnings, as she revealed during aninterviewwith Willie Geist on Sunday TODAY. Their conversation of her latest pursuits found her opening up about the honor of beingcalled an “icon,” a “queen,” or any other esteemed title.

“Well, when I hear those words, I think Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, Tammy Wynette, Barbara Mandrell, Anne Murray, Minnie Pearl. All of those women are thepioneers, the icons, the legends that I got to learn from,” McEntire admitted.

She clearly takes her position as a role model for other acts very seriously, stating that in her mind, “it’s a huge responsibility.”

“It’s a cool feeling,” she continued. “I definitely want to — in my span that I get to do this — I want to find ways of doing it better so it will make it easier on them. Then it’s their responsibility to move forward, find a better way of doing something for the people coming up next behind them. So we’ve all got responsibilities. And it’s always to make it better.”

On top of all her musical success, McEntire has dedicated years to lending her talents to the art of TV, movies, and even Broadway, where she played a critically acclaimed lead role in Irving Berlin’sAnnie Get Your Gun.
