During the week of May 13th, Voya Financial hosted their annual National Days of Service where employees had the opportunity to host and/or participate in community service events to give back to our communities. Voya had over two-thirds of our employees volunteer that week! I want to extend a special thank you to my EPMO leadership team and Voya volunteers who took time out of their busy schedules to volunteer beside me and to learn more about one of my favorite local charities, Gifts of Love. Gifts of Love reduces financial crises for working individuals and families in the Greater Hartford area by providing food, clothing, fuel assistance, and much needed hope and love to those who are struggling to make ends meet. Their clientele has risen over 80% year-over-year, and they are now serving over 450 families. On May 13th, I organized two groups of volunteers to help spruce up the entrance of Gifts of Love by pulling weeds, digging up old plants, and planting beautiful new plants and flowers by their Avon office entryway. A special thank you to Voya for donating the plants and flowers. We also stained some donated benches and organized hundreds of donated canned goods and groceries that were donated via a local food drive in collaboration with the USPS. Both of my children spent time in Yale New Haven Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NNICU). Both were full-term and thankfully have no long term repercussions of their rough start into this world. Grace is four and Senny is two years old, and both are thriving. Yale’s NNICU saved both of my babies’ lives. I can never fully express my gratitude to them, and I wanted to do more to give back and say thanks.Therefore, I joined the Yale NNICU Patient and Family Advisory Board a few years ago. We are putting together gift bags for the families in the Yale NNICU again on November 17th in honor of Prematurity Awareness Day. Not all babies come to the NICU because of prematurity, but one out of every ten babies are born prematurely.These bags will have books for families to read to the babies, snacks to nourish the families, and all sort of treats to help promote self-care and comfort to the families going through an incredibly difficult time.As we approach the holiday season, maybe this cause resonates with you and your family and maybe you’d like to help.
