Glowing against the odds - The oyster’s inspiring sagaThe oyster and pearl story is a symbolic tale often used to convey a valuable lesson about turning adversity into something beautiful and valuable. While there are variations of this story, here is a common version:Once upon a time, a small, ordinary oyster lived in the depths of the ocean. This oyster went about its days, filtering the water to find bits of food and going about its routine. One day, a grain of sand found its way into the oyster's shell. Now, this grain of sand was an irritant to the oyster. It caused discomfort and unease. The oyster, however, did not cast the grain of sand away. Instead, it began to do something remarkable. Over time, the oyster started to coat the irritating grain of sand with layer upon layer of a lustrous, iridescent substance – nacre. (Nacre is a hard, iridescent, crystalline substance secreted by some animals in response to an irritant, it creates the shiny visual effect attributed to pearls.)Despite the initial discomfort, the oyster transformed the adversity of the irritating grain of sand into something exquisite. And so, after years of persistent efforts, a magnificent pearl emerged within the shell. The pearl that resulted from the oyster's response to adversity became a symbol of beauty, resilience, and the potential for something remarkable to arise from challenges. The story imparts a valuable lesson about transforming difficulties into opportunities for growth and creating something precious out of adversity.“The pearl only happens when sand gets inside an oyster and irritates it.” – Annie KaganOysters that make pearls are God’s way of showing us why we have difficulties. It is only by facing the irritants of life and creatively overcoming hardships that we, like pearls, can grow. We value pearls for their exquisite beauty.Katha Pachisi - The Story Bank #growth #transformation #storytelling

As the sun sets and the sky is painted with hues of red, one of the most fascinating spectacles of the natural world begins. It's almost time, and the echoes of a stirring and chattering crowd emerge from the depths of a cave. Thousands of hungry bats prepare for their evening flight, circling within the cave, awaiting the precise moment to embark on their nightly journey. In the fading light, flicking tongues start to appear from rock cracks and holes, stealthily followed by graceful and beautifully adorned bodies. Cuban boas, known locally as "Majá de Santa María," undisputed giants of the snake kingdom in this country that have become adept at having a feast in these caves every night. With anticipation, the boas abandon their daytime shelters, strategically positioning themselves near the cave entrance, also awaiting the perfect moment. Dozens of boas may aggregate in a particular cave at a single time. And it is here that the remarkable dance of predator and prey takes place. Finally, the first bat exits the cave, and thousands more immediately follow, creating a river of wings and a symphony of squeaks. The show has begun! As the bats rush out, the boas stretch their necks like rods and strike with lightning speed, lunging amidst the flurry of wings with their mouths wide open. After many failed attempts, most boas will successfully secure a well-deserved meal by the end of the night. With a stable food supply and favorable microclimatic conditions year-round, these caves play a crucial role in the life cycle of the Cuban boa. By preserving these sites, we will be unequivocally contributing to the long-term conservation of this magnificent creature and its bat prey base. Together, we shall safeguard the delicate balance of this mesmerizing ecosystems, ensuring that the Cuban boa and its winged companions continue to thrive in these sanctuaries that have stood the test of millions of years.Video taken by Juan C.
