Modulation of Platelet Functions Assessment during Menstruation and Ovulatory Phases

2019 •

Professor Fathelrahman Gameel

During menstruation, endometrial hemostasis is achieved by platelet aggregation, fibrin deposition, and thrombus formation that interact with local endocrine and immunological factors which cause termination of menstrual bleeding. Interactions between steroidal sex hormones and platelet functions are not well understood. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of platelet function during the menstrual cycle and luteal phase in women of reproductive age. The cross-sectional study on women of reproductive age included 44 healthy women. Platelet function was assessed by PFA-100TM analyzer with collagen/epinephrine and collagen/ADP cartridges during the menstrual cycle and luteal phase. There were no significant differences in platelet function between menstruation and ovulatory phase. Platelet activity in Arab collagen/epinephrine cartridge increased during menstruation compared to non-Arab ethnic subjects and no significant differences in platelet function were found when usi...

Differences in Platelet Glycoprotein Expression During Menstruation Cycle and Ovulatory Phase

2019 •

Waleed Albuali

INTRODUCTION: The variations in the physiological properties of female platelets during menstrual cycle phases, pregnancy and postmenopausal women to interactions with platelet CD49b, CD42b, CD41a and CD61 expression glycoprotein receptors were not well understood. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the expression of these glycoprotein receptors during menstruation and ovulatory phase of menstrual cycle in reproductive age women. METHODS: It is across section study including 44 healthy young non‑hormonal contraceptives taking women aged between 19-44 years to determine the effect of estrogen on the expression level of platelet glycoprotein receptors (GPIb, GPIIa, GPIIb and GPIIIa) in its resting state in women in reproductive age. RESULTS: No significant difference in the expression of CD42b, CD41a and CD61 between menstruation and ovulatory phases in resting platelets in all subjects. However, this study showed a significant difference in CD49b expression in no...

Longitudinal effects of menopausal hormone treatments on platelet characteristics and cell-derived microvesicles

2015 •

John Heit

Activated platelets serve as a catalyst for thrombin generation and a source of vasoactive and mitogenic factors affecting vascular remodeling. Oral menopausal hormone treatments (MHT) may carry greater thrombotic risk than transdermal products. This study compared effects of oral and transdermal MHT on platelet characteristics, platelet proteins, and platelet-derived microvesicles (MV) in recently menopausal women. Platelets and MV were prepared from blood of a subset of women (n = 117) enrolled in the Kronos Early Estrogen Prevention Study prior to and after 48 months of treatment with either oral conjugated equine estrogen (0.45 mg/day), transdermal 17β-estradiol (50 µg/day), each with intermittent progesterone (200 mg/day for 12 days a month), or placebo pills and patch. Platelet count and expression of platelet P-selectin and fibrinogen receptors were similar across groups. An aggregate measure of 4-year change in vasoactive and mitogenic factors in platelet lysate, by principl...

Effect of a 'progestin only' contraceptive on platelet aggregation in a Pakistani set of population

Salman Adil

Safe use of progestin-only hormonal preparations has remained quite controversial though they are being employed in various disorders very commonly. These hormones result in a number of adverse effects in the body, the most drastic being predisposition to higher risk of thromboembolism with reports of involvement of platelets. Despite a large number of studies, no definite inference had been derived regarding the effects of these agents on blood coagulation. It has been reported that the response in various ethnic groups may vary. Therefore this study is designed to observe the effects of progestin-only hormonal contraceptives regarding primary hemostasis in our population. We carried out this study on 50 women divided into two equal groups of 25 each, namely, a group of users of Progestin-only injectable hormonal contraceptive Norethisterone oenanthate 200 mg used as a 2-monthly injection and a control group and studied platelet aggregation against ADP, Collagen, Epinephrine and Ri...

Association between mean platelet volume and different phases of menstrual cycle in primary dysmenorrhea

2013 •

Selda Isık

Blood cells play a major role in homeostasis and inflammation. Primary dysmenorrhea (PD) involves the production of prostaglandins and leukotrienes, which cause inflammation in uterine tissue. Aim of this study was to investigate whether there is a relation between complete blood count parameters and PD during the menstrual cycle. The study included 41 cases diagnosed as primary dysmenorrhea (mean age, 23.02 +/- 3.43 years) and 40 individuals who control subject (mean age, 23.76 +/- 3.13 years). Hematologic parameters were measured on menstrual phase (day 1-4), follicular phase (day 9-12), and luteal phase (day 21-23) during menstrual cycle. There were no statistically differences between hematological parameters of two groups except for mean platelet volume (MPV). MPV of PD and control groups at each phase of menstrual cycle were 7.71 vs 8.61 (p = 0.01); 7.66 vs 8.56 (p = 0.005); 7.75 vs 8.53 (p = 0.01), respectively. PD is associated with decreased MPV and platelets may be involve...
