Modulation of Platelet Functions Assessment during Menstruation and Ovulatory Phases

During menstruation, endometrial hemostasis is achieved by platelet aggregation, fibrin deposition, and thrombus formation that interact with local endocrine and immunological factors which cause termination of menstrual bleeding. Interactions between steroidal sex hormones and platelet functions are not well understood. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of platelet function during the menstrual cycle and luteal phase in women of reproductive age. The cross-sectional study on women of reproductive age included 44 healthy women. Platelet function was assessed by PFA-100TM analyzer with collagen/epinephrine and collagen/ADP cartridges during the menstrual cycle and luteal phase. INTRODUCTION: The variations in the physiological properties of female platelets during menstrual cycle phases, pregnancy and postmenopausal women to interactions with platelet CD49b, CD42b, CD41a and CD61 expression glycoprotein receptors were not well understood. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the expression of these glycoprotein receptors during menstruation and ovulatory phase of menstrual cycle in reproductive age women. Activated platelets serve as a catalyst for thrombin generation and a source of vasoactive and mitogenic factors affecting vascular remodeling. Oral menopausal hormone treatments (MHT) may carry greater thrombotic risk than transdermal products. This study compared effects of oral and transdermal MHT on platelet characteristics, platelet proteins, and platelet-derived microvesicles (MV) in recently menopausal women. Association between mean platelet volume and different phases of menstrual cycle in primary dysmenorrhea

Blood cells play a major role in homeostasis and inflammation. Primary dysmenorrhea (PD) involves the production of prostaglandins and leukotrienes, which cause inflammation in uterine tissue. Aim of this study was to investigate whether there is a relation between complete blood count parameters and PD during the menstrual cycle. The study included 41 cases diagnosed as primary dysmenorrhea (mean age, 23.02 +/- 3.43 years) and 40 individuals who control subject (mean age, 23.76 +/- 3.13 years). Hematologic parameters were measured on menstrual phase (day 1-4), follicular phase (day 9-12), and luteal phase (day 21-23) during menstrual cycle. There were no statistically differences between hematological parameters of two groups except for mean platelet volume (MPV). MPV of PD and control groups at each phase of menstrual cycle were 7.71 vs 8.61 (p = 0.01); 7.66 vs 8.56 (p = 0.005); 7.75 vs 8.53 (p = 0.01), respectively.
