Data surveillance is a civil rights problem, and legislation to protect data privacy can help protect civil rights. To be effective, it must include effective private enforcement, and legislation at the federal level must not preempt state legislation. #Civilrights #surveillance #dataprivacy

The Police Federation National Detectives' Forum Chair, DI Ben Hudson, has urged the Government to adopt the Home Office Policing Productivity Review's recommendation to introduce legislative change in the Data Protection Act to allow easy sharing of information between police and the Crown Prosecution Service.PFEW has been campaigning for this since August 2022 through its #SimplifyDG6 campaign – which the Government has refused to support. The review highlighted about 770,000 hours are spent by investigators redacting text material annually. If digital redaction only achieved an 80 per cent saving in time efficiency, this could free up 618,000 hours of investigators’ time. If the recommendation above is in place, then this concerns only 141,416 files and the saving would be 486,471 hours, it cited.DI Hudson said: “Despite the proposed legislative change having been brought before both houses of Parliament on numerous occasions, the Government has refused to support it. “The legally vetted proposed clause would have no direct or indirect disadvantage, or disrupt the fabric of the Data Protection Act, as it ensures security of personal data would not be compromised. It merely seeks to avoid unnecessary, time-wasting redactions.“The reasons for the Government’s apathy are beyond our comprehension and feels misguided.”Read more 👇

Democracy is a process. Earlier this month the data broker lobby presented a bill before the California State Senate to make it illegal for consumers to hire an agent to help them opt out of data broker surveillance. It also made it possible for data brokers to deny the consumer the ability to forbid data brokers from surveilling them, taking their data without consent and opting out of the sale of our own personal information. In California (and other states) you have the right to tell companies to stop surveilling you, and forbid them from selling your private information. They are not allowed to make this difficult, by law and the Attorney General in California has been taking this very seriously with enforcement actions against companies that abuse consumers by frustrating this process. Thanks to all the work done by consumer agent companies, the consumer privacy advocacy groups that have worked tirelessly on this issue and our customers who reached out to lawmakers to voice their opposition to this absurd law, it was officially withdrawn. California is an important battle ground for consumer data privacy rights. The national spotlight is now the focus. There is a lot to worry about with the proposed national privacy law APRA. It does not clearly articulate the consumers' right to opt out and big tech's obligation to abide by that requirement. If APRA is passed without revision, millions and millions of Americans will lose their right to privacy from surveillance by companies they don't know, have now relationship with, who provide no service and who profit from the sale of our privacy. A wolf in sheep's clothing. We will participate in this discussion and advocate for the basic right of human beings to be free from the commercial surveillance of their families and the selling our privacy to anyone willing to pay. But for today, I'm elated that SB 1076 has officially been withdrawn.https://lnkd.in/gRDAAnnr

🔐 Virginia Takes a Step Forward in Children's Data Protection 🔍Virginia lawmakers are taking steps to bolster privacy protections for minors with proposed amendments to the VCDPA (HB 1688 / SB 1026). 🧒 If passed, the bills will redefine "child," requiring operators to obtain parental consent for registering users under 18 (previously 13). 🚫 The bills also tackle responsible data processing by operators, aiming to prevent targeted advertising, the sale of personal data, and the profiling of minors. If enacted, these changes would mark significant progress in securing children's privacy online. The bills are currently awaiting committee referral.
